Definition Direct Speech
Refers
to reproducing another persons exact word. We use quotation marks.
e.g.
: She says to her friend ”I have been
writing”
She has told you, ”I am reading”
She will say, ”The boy wasn’t lazy”
She will say, ”You have done wrongly”
Definition Indirect Speech
It
also called Reported Speech, is use to communicate what someone else said, nut
without using exact words.
Example
:
Direct
Speech : ’’I’m going to the cinema’’,
she said
Indirect
Speech : She said that he was going to
the cinema.
DS : She will say, ’’You have
done wrongly’’
IS : She will tell you that
you have done wrongly.
DS : She will say, ’’The boy
wasn’t lazy’’
IS : She will tell them that
the boy wasn’t lazy.
Kinds of Indirect Speech
1.
Imperative (command/request)
Direct
Speech : ’’Don’t worry about it’’
Indirect
Speech : She told her friend not to
worry about it.
2.
Interrogative (question)
Direct
Speech : Sean asked to Harry, ’’Are
you an actor?’’
Indirect
Speech : Sean asked if/whether he was an
actor.
3.
Declarative (statement)
Direct
Speech : Mr. Dio said, ’’I worked hard
yesterday’’
Indirect
Speech : Mr. Dio said that he worked
hard the day before.
In command
sentences, direct speech can changed to indirect speech with change ’’said’’ to
be ’’ordered’’ ; ’’told’’ ; ’’forbade’’.
Example :

Mr. Harry said, ’’Open the door’’
IS :
Mr. Harry ordered to open the door
DS :
Qory said, ’’Anton come to here’’
IS :
Qory told Anton to come there.
DS :
Sylvia said to her fans, ’’Do not scream at me’’!
IS :
Sylvia forbade her fans to scream at her.
Time Change
If the reported sentence contains an
expression of time, you must
Change
it to fit in with the time of reporting.
