NEWS ITEM


Pesawat Sriwijaya Air, tergelincir di bandar udara Suapdio pada Jum’at sore. Dugaan penyebab kecelakaan karena, hujan deras dan angin yang bertiup kencang dan bla ... bla ... bla ...
Nah loh, sering pan tuh baca yang begituan di koran,majalah, di internet. Semua itu tuh adalah NEWS ITEM. News Item?? Apaan tuh?? Mau tau lebih nih? Nyok gulir ke bawah,pahami,cermati dan resapi. Selamat Belajar!

Definition 
News item is a twxt which is inform readers about events of teh da. The event are considered newsworthy or important.


Generic Structure
1.   Newsworthy event(s)   : recount(s) the event(s) in a summary form.
2.   Background events      : elaborate what happened, to whom, in what          circumstance
3.   Sources                     : comments by participants in, witnesses to and authorities expert on the event
 
Language Features
·         Short telegraphic information about story captured in headline
·         Generally using Simpel Past Tense (except : Breakig News)
·         Use of material processes to retell the event
·         Using action verb, e.g. : were,run,go,kill, etc.
·         Using sayong verb, e.g. : say,tell
·         Focus on circumstance

How to Find the Information
Using 5W+1H
·         What         : to find what is happening
·         When        : to find the time about event
·         Where       : to find the place of the event
·         Who          : everybody who involves in the event, it can be victim,
  participants, witnesses, authorities, and experts.
·         Why          : to find the cause of the event
·         How          : to find the way how the event happened

Newspaper Headlines in News Item
There are some rules that can help to make a newspaper headlines more comprehensible. They are :
·          The passive voice is used without the appropriate fomr of ‘be’
    e.g.   : Town ‘contaminated’
    become : Town is contaminated.

·        It is ususal to find the complex forms, generally the simple present form   used.
    e.g.   : Fire destroys over 1,500 acres of forest in 2004-2005
    become : Fire has destroyed over 1,500 acres of forest in 2004-
      2005.

·         To refer to the future, headlines often use the infinitive
   e.g.   : Queen to visit Samoa
   become : The Queen is going to visit Samoa.

·        Headlines are not always complete sentence
   e.g.   : More earthquake in Japan.
   become : More earthquakes happened in Japan.
