Definition
·        Noun phrase is a word or group of words in a sentence that act like a noun. A word with a noun or pronoun as its head. The noun head can be accompanied by modifiers, deterimines, and/or complements.
·        A noun phrase most commonly function as a subject, object or complement.
·        A noun phrase generally includes one or more modifying words, but allowance is usually made for single-word minimal noun phrases that are composed only of a noun or pronoun.


Structure
·         Pre-modifiers + noun
 e.g.   : the bags

·         Noun + post-modifiers
 e.g.   : ball there on the roof

·         Pre-modifiers + noun + post-modifiers 
 e.g.   : the glass on the pink table is Ani’s glass.

Explanation
I met Joan => I met your sister

In the sentence the word Joan is a noun, which replace with a group of words (a phrase). Your sister is a phrase and it as a noun in the sentence. 

The Modifiers
A noun phrase has a noun as its head.

·         Determines
 e.g.   : He carried the bags

·         Possessives
 e.g.   : She brought Mary’s bags

·         Adjectives 
 e.g.   : the heavy bag are downstairs

·         Prepositional Phrase
 e.g.   : The bridge over the river

·         Clauses
 e..g.  : the pub we went to
